Use of Calcium Carbide – From Metalworking to Agriculture
Few industrial chemicals are as versatile as calcium carbide. The most well‑known use of calcium carbide is acetylene production for cutting and welding metals. Add water, and you get a flame hot enough to cut through steel plates. That single reaction has made calcium carbide indispensable in shipyards, construction sites, and scrapyards worldwide.
But the use of calcium carbide goes far beyond torches.
Steelmaking – Another critical use of calcium carbide is sulfur removal. When added to molten iron, it captures sulfur and improves final steel quality. Steel mills prefer larger lumps (25‑80 mm) for this job because they sink fast and react deep in the bath.
Chemical industry – Calcium carbide is a starting material for calcium cyanamide, which becomes fertilizers, pesticides, and even a base for certain plastics. This use of calcium carbide relies on consistent, dust‑free granules.
Fruit ripening – In some regions, the acetylene from calcium carbide artificially ripens bananas, mangoes, and other fruits. This use of calcium carbide requires small, fast‑reacting granules (4‑7 mm) that release gas steadily inside ripening chambers. Note: strict safety rules apply.
Mining & lamps – Portable carbide lamps still operate in remote mines where electricity is unavailable. This traditional use of calcium carbide works best with larger lumps (50‑80 mm) that burn slowly for hours.
Right size for each use of calcium carbide
We supply all granulations from our Inner Mongolia plant (70,000 tons/year):
-
1‑4 mm – very fast reaction
-
4‑7 mm – fruit ripening, small generators
-
7‑15 mm – medium acetylene plants
-
15‑25 mm – general industrial gas
-
25‑50 mm – steel desulfurization
-
50‑80 mm – mining lamps, heavy plants
-
80‑120 mm – slow‑release processes
